Why UV-5R?
A hurricane strikes.  Winter storms take down power lines. Terrorists detonate a bomb in a crowded city. Disasters – both natural and manmade – occur with frightening frequency. Reality: We take communications for granted. In the event of an emergency, cell phones and Internet can go down. Do you have the gear to be prepared?

The UV-5R is a great piece of communications gear for the prepared man. It is a multi-purpose VHF / UHF radio transceiver. It plain English, this means that the radio can transmit and receive on many different frequencies, including those that are vital during emergencies.

One common use for the UV-5R is amateur radio, also known as “ham” radio. This transceiver can operate on the popular “2 meter” area of the radio spectrum, located between 144 MHz and 146 MHz. On these frequencies, operators can communicate locally for both casual and emergency use. Amateur radio frequencies are open to only FCC-licensed operators, but this license is not difficult to obtain.

The UV-5R is not limited to only ham frequencies. It has the ability to transmit and receive on FRS, GMRS, and MURS frequencies as well. Each of these radio bands have different operating rules. In general, they can all be used by the public. Be sure to check regulations before transmitting, of course.

There are hundreds of repeater stations throughout the Malaysia, which increase the range of a ham and GMRS radios to tens or even hundreds of miles. These repeaters often have battery backups and can function even in an emergency.

Unlike cell phones, handheld radios do not need a nearby tower or repeater to work. As long as other radios are in range, a radio like the UV-5R is a self-contained comm station. In other words, the UV-5R can be used in an emergency even if the cell phone network is damaged or overloaded with calls.

The UV-5R has been tested by several ManlyAdventure contributors who are also FCC-licensed amateur radio operators.
